Does Flash work in your mobile? Which standard is best for your new site? Is there a solution that works for all visitors? With the advent of smartphones and new mobile platforms, web development has become more complicated. Here is some help at sorting out the various concepts.

The answer to the first question is easy. Today there is no support for Flash in for example Ipads or Iphones. To be able to see and hear videos in them the present web standard has to be updated. And that is ongoing. The solution is called HTML5.

But shouldn’t I choose HTML5 then?

The advantage of HTML5 is that it you can see and hear videos on the net without a load of plugins. But the standard is still under development. And unfortunately older browsers like Internet Explorer 6, 7, 8, lack support for HTML5. So if you choose to develop your site using HTML5, you exclude a lot of visitors.

The advantage of Flash is that it is already installed in nearly all web browsers. Flash gives you greater freedom when you design your site. You can create softer transitions and make your site a pleasant experience. And should your company have a unique font, there’s no problem.

The drawbacks then? Flash demands a lot of resources. A visit to aftonbladet.se, where Flash is used in abundance, makes your computer feel ancient. And as I said, Flash doesn’t work in all mobiles.

But what should you choose then? In a few years’ time, the answer will be HTML5, but we’re not there yet. And Flash will live on for quite a while. By giving them really good service. Just look at Skanova, Sweden’s largest provider of net capacity. Right now Skanova is making a huge investment to grow its fibre network. But honestly speaking, there isn’t much difference between Skanova’s fibre and the competitors’. A fibre cable is a fibre cable. Getting Sweden’s telecom operators to prefer Skanova is mainly about giving them a really positive customer experience.

The latest positive experience is their new website. Here the emphasis has been on making it easy for customers. It’s easier to find, easier to get into contact with Skanova, you get access to more information without needing to log in. And lots, lots more.

Sandberg Trygg was commissioned to help with the launch of the new website. First and foremost it was important to communicate internally why the site had been changed (it’s part of Skanova’s overall focus on service). The campaign included digital DMs to both employees and customers, and a film on the web where Skanova’s CEO, Anna Philipson, explains the change. We also made banners and posters and devised a competition to support the launch.

Sharing a web article nowadays only needs one click. But you don’t always want to subject your reader to a full-length article. You may just want to point out something particularly interesting. A new feature introduced by the New York Times will do the trick. It allows users to link to and highlight individual sentences and paragraphs in web stories.

Simply hit the shift key twice on the story you want to share. Small icons appear next to every paragraph. Click on one of them and it places the paragraph-linked URL up in the address bar of your browser. Email the link. Clicking on it will open the article with the marked text highlighted in yellow. Clearly this feature can come in handy in your customer communication. Highlighting a relevant paragraph in a financial report, technical handbook or an interesting business case study will help your customer quickly find the right information. It saves time and energy, and your customers will appreciate that.

Pick-n-Go® is a new concept from Kollmorgen based on streamlining the picking process in warehouses with driverless forklift trucks, AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles). The forklift follows the picker wherever he or she goes and adjusts the forks to the right height to receive the goods. It saves time, costs and improves the working environment.

Ramirent is the second biggest rental company for building and construction machines and the company’s motto is “Your local rental equipment supplier”. When Sandberg Trygg was assigned to produce a new website for Ramirent, we chose to create “Your local website”.

Ramirent’s local website includes, among other things, a customer centre when you can rent the machines you need. Instead of travelling out to a local customer centre you log in to ramirent.se and order what you need and also say where you would like it delivered. You can also get statistics on which products have been rented, which facilitates project management – a vital function in the construction business

Sandberg Trygg has also produced an advertising campaign to promote ramirent.se. The campaign appeared on specific business websites and in the trade press.
